While there are several options for you, like becoming a Teaching Assistant, a Learning Assistant and so on, becoming a proctor is one of the low hanging part-time jobs with minimum commitment.
A proctor is paid $10- $20 per hour and is an important contributor in maintaining integrity of the exams.
A Proctor's or Testing Specialist's assignment goes like this:
- Look at the calendar of proctored exams in testing center
- Pick the slot which suits you and commit to it
- Collect the question papers and scantrons and take them to the examination centre
- Distribute the question paper among the students
- Watch out for any suspicious behaviour in the examination hall
- Collect the answer sheets and deposit them.
Now the next question is who do you contact in college to become a proctor?
At the Testing Center a Testing Center Coordinator manages the
- Creation of calendar of proctored exams
- Recruiting, training, paying the student proctors who act as Testing Center's temporary employees
- Help students in scheduling their exams. At some places it takes 90% of their time.
- Keeping track of new proctoring technologies and managing the existing ones with the supervisor
- Maintaining data regarding the tests
- Ensuring that the NCTA guidelines and FERPA regulations are met
and so on.
All this is done by a very small and diligent team and sometimes by just one person with the help of the supervisor who is generally the Dean, Director or a Manager depending on the college.
So, what skills does a proctor need?
A proctor needs the following skills
- Disciplined and Well Organized
- Good at learning softwares if it is online proctoring
- A proctor should not be lost in his own thoughts when the students are taking an exam
